MacRune's Guevara
Jeannetta Cochrane Theatre, 1969
(experimental branch of The National Theatre)
Role: Ché Guevara
MacRune's Guevara,
by John Spurling,
tells the story of a Scottish painter named MacRune who has
covered his apartment with pictures of Che Guevara. After he
dies, the next man to enter his apartment is an art critic named
Edward Hotel. The art critic proceeds to explore the life of
Guevara and MacRune -- as well as his own ambition. The scenes
are alternately comedic, tragic and even musical.
The play premiered with the National
Theatre's performance in 1969 with Jeremy as the revolutionary
Ché Guevara. This was a truncated version ordered by Kenneth
Tynan and became a subject of political controversy as some
people viewed it as an attack on Guevara.
