Sally Ann Howes played Elizabeth Barrett to Jeremy's Robert
Browning in this operetta-style musical.
Robert and Elizabeth is a 1964 adaptation of the 1930
play The Barretts of Wimpole
Street, which Jeremy later performed on television. Both
works tell the story of the romance and elopement of poets
Robert Browning and Elizabeth Barrett.
A Canada Press review of opening night in Ottawa was kind to
Jeremy, but noted that "apart from the stars, the production had
few good points":
-
Jeremy Brett, Sally Ann Howe and Michael Denison demonstrate
their star ability as performers but the rest of the production
of a British musical comedy drew a cool reception. ... [The
National Arts Centre opera house production] suffered from
flimsy sets, uncertain lighting, backstage noise and a public
address system so shrill it hid many of the lyrics.
