The story depicts the real-life romance between poets Elizabeth Barrett and Robert Browning, despite the opposition of her father Edward Moulton-Barrett.

In a 1991 interview, Jeremy mentions that a renewed offer to do Sherlock Holmes came "while I was doing Browning, in The Barretts of Wimpole Street, with beloved Jane Lapotaire, as my Elizabeth Barrett -- wonderful actress."
