Young Dan'l Boone
The Trail Blazer
12 September 1977, CBS
Role: Langford
This series about the adventures of
20-something Daniel Boone (played by Rick Moses) lasted only
four weeks. Jeremy was in the premiere episode, landing the role
after Jeremy Kemp had to leave to return to England. The show
was filmed entirely in Tennessee, even though the action is set
in Kentucky.
In the show, Daniel Boone is out to blaze a
trail through the wilderness, through the foreboding Cumberland
Gap. What he doesn't take into account is that such a trail
would open the territory to settlers -- just what the French
don't want. Their efforts to thwart young Daniel Boone sets up
the pattern of the action for future episodes. In the first
episode, the French hire a killer -- Langford -- to kill young
Dan'l. Langford waits in ambush, aided by a band of Shawnee
trackers. However, Boone is able to thwart to the attack.
A New York Times review noted that despite
the overall nonviolence of the show, "The British villain,
played with rolling eyes and a curious flirtatiousness by Jeremy
Brett, is allowed to plunge to his death while scaling a
mountain."
The review summed up the show with two key words: "harmless" and
"silly."
