In this production, Jeremy played Macbeth, the title character and a general in the army of Duncan, the King of Scotland. In a 1960 production, JB played Malcolm, the eldest son of King Duncan.

Piper Laurie plays Lady Macbeth in this version, which has been criticized for low production values and overall poor quality.

Synopsis courtesy of RJDoll2:

For all who are dying to see Jeremy freed from his Sherlockian restraints, this is a must-see. He portrays a very passionate Macbeth this unusual adaptation, with its original costumes and an absence of Scottish accents.

Jeremy Brett fans will be titillated by the now-infamous kissing scene with Lady Macbeth. Also Jeremy's usual well-groomed appearance gives way to what can best be described as "caveman" Macbeth.

The story unfolds as the lead characters plot and commit the murder of their King, Duncan. Struggling to thwart the prophecies of the three witches, Macbeth orders multiple murders, including women and children. Under the strain of a guilty conscience and struggling to maintain his sanity, Macbeth's world begins to crumble. Jeremy gives a stellar performance as the paranoid, power hungry tyrant in an unforgettable portrayal of Shakespeare's classic character.
