-
Katherine Mansfield was a world-renowned short
story writer and New Zealand's most famous author. Three volumes of
her stories appeared in her lifetime (1988-1923). ... In addition
to her stories, the letters and journals published by her husband,
John Middleton Murry, reveal intimate details of her life and
thoughts. He also published private papers, as well as unfinished
stories and poems.
-
In London in 1911, Mansfield met John
Middleton Murry, an Oxford scholar, prominent critic, and editor of
a literary quarterly publication, Rhythm. They became lovers and
were later to marry in 1918.
Mansfied and Murry were closely associated
with D.H. Lawrence and his wife Frieda. They shared a house in
England in 1914-15. Lawrence's novel, Women in Love, has
characters that are probably partially based on Lawrence and his
wife, and Murry and Mansfield.
