From Viewer's Comments at IMDb: As Jack Absolute, Jeremy Brett is brilliant and hilarious in an understated and conspiratorial manner, and he is also the perfect romantic lead, dashing and absolutely gorgeous in his ponytail, epaulets & riding boots.

When this production aired on PBS in the
United States, it was part of Classic Theatre, which was
created by Joan Wilson (who at that time was Jeremy's
future
wife). A companion piece to The Rivals was Classic
Theatre Preview, in which Jeremy discussed the last
tempestuous days of the playwright Richard Brinsley Sheridan
during an interview at Sheridan's last home in London's famous
Saville Row.
Joan Wilson conducted the interview. Jeremy
tells the story that about 4 minutes of it was used on the air,
but they talked for more than two hours. They received the
outtakes as a wedding present!
